MIDNIGHT MADNESS 2002
December 27th, Hot Springs AR
Midnight Madness is a road race game based on the 1980 movie of the same name.  The objective is to solve clues to find the location of the next clue, and on and on until you reach the finish line.

We were inspired to play the game by a group of people at Stanford University who play a similar game every year, called simply "the Game."   It has since spread to Microsoft Corporation, and cities across the US, in various forms and elaborations.  You can follow some of the links below to learn more about the Game.

This webpage is an account of the game in AR by Dave Hill, the wheelman of the legendary Meat Machine, the team that won First Place.

It is our hope that this was an innagural year for the game in AR, and that there will be more Midnight Madness in the future.

The preparation:

We had a team meeting the Thursday night before Friday’s Midnight Madness at my parent’s house in Hot Springs.  We loaded up my car, the “Meat Wagon” with tools and equipment after a trip to Lowe’s and rummaging through my parent’s garage.  Here is a list of the equipment we loaded into the Wagon for the game:

Screwdrivers, Hammer, Hacksaw, Sledgehammer, Grappling Hook, Compass, Rope, Flashlights, Prybar, Bungee Cords, Wench, Bolt Cutters, Binnoculars, Walkie Talkies, Laptop with Wireless Internet, Maps, Magnifying Glass, Scissors, Leatherman,Knife

Most of this stuff we kept in an aluminum briefcase with foam padding.  We called it “the Case.”  Most of it was stuff we figured we needed after watching other teams play in the preliminary Midnight Madness we had designed the month before.  As it turned out, we used most of the stuff we brought, even some stuff we never ever thought we’d use.
